Vallejo Adult School's Family Literacy Fair
On November 7, 2009, the Vallejo Adult School hosted its first annual Family Literacy Fair. Students of the adult school and families of English Language Learners in the Vallejo City Unified School District were invited to attend.
Admission to the event was free for parents and children of all ages. More than 350 people participated in the event. Activities included puppet shows, games and crafts that were related to the books read during the fair. Scholastic Books and Barnes and Noble sold books onsite, and the Solano County Library also had a display.
Upon completion of the literacy activities, families enjoyed a free lunch and played in the jump houses provided by the adult school.
“Research shows that when adults increase their literacy level, they support the literacy growth of their children,” says Kay Hartley, principal, Vallejo Adult School. “Our Family Literacy Fair provided a fun way to encourage both adults and children to read.”
