Distance Learning Report
Learn about trends in distance learning across the state in a new report from CASAS.
The new Distance Learning Report is now available. The report, which is also known as the California Adult Education Innovation and Alternative Instructional Delivery Program report, is compiled annually using data provided by Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment Systems (CASAS). This report is based on data gathered in 2009-10.
Distance learning provides education access to adult learners not enrolled in traditional learning institutions, and uses educational media to bridge the gap between teacher and learner.
Due to the effects of budget cuts and decreased program flexibility, the report found that student enrollment in distance classes is down by 55 percent.
On a positive note, however, many programs are using technology to innovate, moving from video checkout platforms to online and blended options. Refer to the California Distance Learning Project (CDLP) publication on models and best practices for blended learning programs to learn more.
Research also suggests that distance learning success in California is especially high for ESL instruction. Refer to OTAN’s article for a synopsis of the report findings.
